What’s all the buzz about honey?

What’s all the buzz about honey?

I’m a huge honey fan and that makes me super picky when choosing the brand and type of honey to give the right flavour and medicinal benefits I like for myself, family and my clients.

I have found an incredible company called Honey Tradition and they have been making honey since 1929 and WOW, this is the best honey I’ve ever tasted.

The honey that Honey Tradition produce is what is known as single origin which means that unlike many honey's often found in the supermarket is not blended, free from adulterated substances and is produced by bees whose food source is that of bee pollen and honey only - not sugar substitutes often used by the larger corporate producers of honey and other bee products. People can check the quality of their honey by checking the labels which will indicate this. You'll see on Honey Tradition that it is 100% bee honey - this is usually a good sign!

They also support local forestry organisations in Slovakia who preserve and improve the natural habitat for bees. Therefore, those purchasing Honey Tradition honey are also supporting such organisations which are contributing positively to the ecosystem.

What is Honeydew Honey?

Honeydew honey is a type of honey produced by bees using honeydew, which, like nectar, is a sugary liquid that derives from sap. To better understand what honeydew honey is, we need to know that bees can produce honey by collecting and transforming two different nutrients: nectar and, indeed, honeydew. The honeydew, however, unlike nectar, is not produced directly from plants, but from insects that absorb sap from plants to live and multiply, and secrete a product still rich in nutrients, especially sugars: honeydew. Honeydew droplets stick to leaves, branches, barks and so on; the bees find it, collect it and, through their work, produce honey.

This honey is really rich, darker in colour and this honey contains a higher antioxidant, antibacterial activity level, mineral content and greater nutritional and therapeutic benefits than most regular flower honey. Honeydew honey has a higher amino acid composition and disease-fighting antioxidant capacity

The Health Benefits of Acacia Honey

Like most varieties, raw acacia honey provides a wide range of health benefits due to its high concentration of natural antioxidants which fight damage from free radicals. Specifically, acacia is rich in flavonoids which are believed to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer (including lung cancer) and regular consumption of acacia honey has been shown to lower blood pressure.

Acacia honey has natural antibacterial properties. It contains substances which produce and release hydrogen peroxide into the body, an acid known to kill bacteria. It’s also a strong antiseptic, useful for both external and internal use to heal body sores, reverse skin problems like acne and eczema. There are claims that acacia honey is effective in treating stress, insomnia and sleep apnea, but not enough research has been done to substantiate them but I’m definitely trying it with my clients!

There are important minerals and vitamins in acacia honey, including magnesium and vitamin C. And like most varieties of honey it’s an anti-inflammatory, making it a good treatment for sore throats, coughs, and respiratory system issues.

Linden Honey

Linden honey is a premiere honey. It has a wide range of applications. It is primarily used in treating colds and fevers. Linden honey’s anti-bacterial quality makes it ideal for the control of inflammation of respiratory organs. It is also used a fortifying agent and it supports the heart. It is applied externally to help heal festering sores on the skin, eczema, and burns. Except the excellent taste and unique flavour, linden honey has many health benefits. The natural sugars in the honey have prebiotic effect, feeding the good bacteria in digestive system.

Linden honey is a natural tonic, raising energy levels and improving immune system. The viscous consistency of the honey allows it stick to the throat lining and this ability, along with its antibacterial properties, makes linden honey an excellent remedy for sore throat and cough.

Another reason why the white honey is well absorbed by the body, is that many minerals in it are at exactly the same concentration as in the blood. The regular use of linden honey can help to normalise metabolism, digestion and regulate hormones.
